Use of Professional Title

Understanding the Use of Professional Titles or Designations

Professional titles or designations serve as a mark of credibility and expertise in various fields. When you see a professional using a title such as "Dr.," "CPA," "PEng," or "P.Bio," it signifies that they have met specific educational, experience, and ethical standards set by a governing body or regulatory authority.

These designations are not just about prestige; they assure the public that the professional has the necessary qualifications and adheres to high standards of practice. For instance, a "RPF" (Registered Professional Forester) has undergone rigorous training, experience, and testing in forestry, ensuring they can provide trustworthy advice and services.

Using professional titles helps build trust and confidence between professionals and the public. It assures clients and customers that they are dealing with individuals who are competent, ethical, and accountable to regulatory bodies that oversee their profession.

Titles are established in provincial legislation. As part of the oversight of the profession, a regulator is authorized by the legislation to award the exclusive right to use specific titles to those of its members who continue to meet the membership requirements of the organization. The organization in turn is responsible to ensure that the integrity of the title is maintained. All this is done in the interest of public protection for the quality of service to be provided by the profession.

Members may only use title after their name in the provincial jurisdiction(s) where they are are registered as a regulated registrant or member. This also applies to the use of a professional seal or stamp and the use of title on correspondence and business cards identifying a “professional” location outside of the jurisdiction in which an individual is registered.
